What Is Claude Duet? A One-Shot Guide to Use It in Your Business

Your inbox fills up while you sleep. Invoices wait, meetings clash, and a customer email sits unanswered for two days.

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Duet to fix exactly that. It is a new app where Claude checks your work apps first and comes to you, instead of waiting in a chat.

Duet sends a morning brief and does tasks in the background. It asks before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes anything.

This one-shot guide explains what it is and how to use it in your business automation. It also compares Duet with OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse.

All facts come from Anthropic's announcement and launch coverage by Reuters and Engadget.

What you'll learn

  • What Claude Duet is, in plain words.
  • How it works through a normal work day.
  • What jobs it can take off your plate.
  • How to put it to work in your business, step by step.
  • How it compares with Dots and Muse, and who can join the waitlist.

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a standalone app from Anthropic where Claude works as a proactive agent for you. It watches your connected apps, brings you what needs attention, and keeps working after you close the app.

Proactive agent is an AI helper that starts work on its own when it spots something, instead of waiting for your message. Think of a good office manager who checks your desk before you arrive, not a bell that only rings when you press it.

Anthropic built Duet for professionals and small business owners with too much to track. That is stated on the official Claude Duet product page.

Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, picked for its judgment on what needs you and what can wait. Learn more in Claude Opus 5.5 explained in plain words.

How Claude Duet works through your day

Each morning, Duet sends you a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps. It then checks those apps every few hours, messaging you only when something needs attention.

You talk to it in one ongoing thread, by text or voice. It carries over your memory, skills, and apps from Claude, so there is little to set up.

Virtual machine is a private computer that lives in the cloud, not on your phone or laptop. Duet works on its own virtual machine with its own browser, so your phone does not need to stay on.

It does not check your apps nonstop, on purpose. Nonstop checking would burn through your plan limits much faster.

What Claude Duet can do for a small business

Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. Connector is a ready made link between Claude and one of your apps, like Gmail or QuickBooks.

Jobs from Anthropic's launch announcement.

Tasks range from simple admin, like scheduling a meeting, to heavy work like building dashboards, forecasts, prototypes, and web apps.

For buying, Duet pays through Link, Stripe's wallet, or Shop Pay. Link uses a virtual card, so your real card number stays private.

Anthropic says early testers already use it this way. One broker said Duet flagged a showing booked on the wrong day, without being asked.

A restaurant owner with about 110 staff said he runs accounting, support, and marketing through it, without opening 100 tabs.

How to use Claude Duet in your business automation

Start with one job that repeats every week and eats your mornings. Invoice chasing, inbox sorting, and the daily numbers check are the easiest first wins.

  1. Pick one repeat job, like chasing unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe.
  2. Connect only the apps that job needs, nothing more.
  3. Tell Duet the rule in plain words, for example: draft a reminder when an invoice is 7 days late.
  4. Keep approvals on for every send and payment while you test.
  5. Read the morning brief for two weeks, then add the next job.

Think of it like training a new office helper. One clear job first, trust builds, then more jobs follow.

It asks before it acts

Duet reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own. Before anything real, it shows you the plan and waits for your approval.

Duet must ask you firstDuet will never do it
Send a message for youTrade securities
Make a paymentMove money between your accounts
Sign a documentShare card numbers or government ID
Delete anythingSee your passwords or sign in tokens

Nothing sends, pays, signs, or deletes without your tap, and you can disconnect any app at any time.

How Anthropic keeps your data safe in Duet

Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign in tokens. When a site needs a password, you type it into a separate form on your device.

A new safety checker reads every message before it goes out. It is built to refuse sharing the most private data, like card numbers and government ID.

Health or personal finance details go out only when you have clearly told Duet to send them. MacRumors covered the same safety design on launch day.

Anthropic says red teams and an outside firm tested Duet for security holes, and a public bug bounty covers it.

Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots vs Meta Muse

Duet is the third big always on agent in six weeks. Meta shipped Muse first, OpenAI shipped Dots next, and Anthropic has now answered both.

The simple read: Duet is the work focused one, with strict approval rules. Dots reaches more chat tools, and Muse leans to personal errands.

We compared the earlier agents in our Dots vs Muse vs GrokBot agent comparison. Muse's rise is in the story of Meta Muse and its fast comeback.

What Claude Duet cannot do yet

This is a research preview, and Anthropic is open about the rough edges. Duet can misread a conversation or judge urgency wrong.

  • Personal errands are weaker than work tasks. Booking tickets is the example Anthropic itself gives.
  • You cannot watch its cloud browser yet. It works out of sight and reports back.
  • Microsoft 365 is not in yet, so Outlook and Teams work stays invisible today.
  • Signing in with passwords saved in 1Password is coming later, not at launch.
  • Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. Anthropic says they come later.

One more limit: disconnecting an app stops new access, but past chats keep what Duet learned. To remove something fully, delete the chat too.

Who can get it, and the Claude Duet download steps

Access starts narrow. You need a Claude Pro or Max plan and a US account, and invites go out in waves.

  1. Open the official Claude Duet waitlist page and join with the same email as your Claude account.
  2. Download the standalone Duet app on iOS or Android, or open it on the web at claude.ai.
  3. Connect only the apps you are happy for it to read, like Gmail and your calendar.
  4. Set what it should watch and how often it may message you.
  5. Review its first morning brief, then widen access slowly as trust builds.

Duet costs nothing extra during the preview. But its checks and tasks use your plan limits, so heavy users may hit them sooner.

The approval rules above mean the risky steps always wait for you. You cannot break anything by testing it.

What people are saying online

Anthropic announced Duet on X on October 21, 2026. Here is the announcement from Claude (@claudeai):

The same launch video is live as Claude's official launch post on Threads, where early comments cheer the idea. Many ask when it reaches countries outside the US.

On Instagram, creators are breaking the launch down slide by slide. One clear example is this nine slide Claude Duet carousel on Instagram, covering the agent race and the safety rules.
