How to Use Claude Skills (Quick Start Guide)
Claude Skills are reusable prompt documents that tell Claude exactly how to perform a specific task — consistently, every time.
Instead of re-explaining what you want each conversation, you write the instructions once, save them as a document, and upload or reference them whenever you need that task done.
Setting one up:
- Write a skill document — a structured prompt with the role Claude should play, output format, constraints, and 1-2 examples of ideal output
- Save it as a Google Doc, text file, or Notion page
- Upload it to any Claude conversation when you need that skill, or add it to a Project’s knowledge base for automatic access
What makes a good skill document:
Write it like you’re training a new hire. Be specific about the task, the format you want back, what to avoid, and include examples. The more precise the instructions, the more consistent the output.
